“Katie, get to class, you can’t be late to history again.” I nodded in reply to Mr. Faylee, upset that I would have to read my text messages later. I trudged off to history, but when I winged around the left corner a little too fast I ended up smacking into Jason. We both fell backwards and landed hard, but even through the pain, we couldn’t help but laugh.
“Hi, Bubbles.” Jason sneered at my nickname with a huge grin on his face as he sat on the floor across from me.
“Hi, Klutz.” I dramatized big eyed and giggled as I started to collect the books that fell out of my bag from the collision. Jason managed to stand up and offered me his hand and helped me up.
“You wouldn’t have to call me Klutz if you stopped running into me, you know.” Jason stated matter-of-factly smiling at me.
“It’s your nickname; you must be the one running into me,” I answered blissfully, feeling like I won. “Now I need to get to history or I’m dead!” I finished, slinging my bag over my shoulder and waving goodbye.
“Later.” replied Jason as he stepped around me and walked away.
Welcome to Tellinski Prep Middle School or as I like to call it, T.P. Middle. Everyone here gets a nickname, if you’re cool you get a good one, if your not… well that doesn’t really matter. Lucky for me, I’m invisible, so my nickname is Bubbles, since they’re clear and all. I know it’s kind of lame, but that’s because you haven’t gotten your nickname yet.
Nothing much happened in history class, the teacher called on me, I answered incorrectly, and then she called on Meg (aka: smarties), she got it right. Happens everyday, Meg always turns around and gives me a sympathetic look, but I just shrug my shoulders and force a smile.
After history comes science, a class I dread but somehow manage to do well in. I almost hurled when it came time to dissect the owl pellets, I was politely excused from the room and I spent a good ten minutes in the bathroom trying to recollect myself. After science comes my favorite time of the day, lunch. I was relieved to give my hand a break from writing so much. I stood impatiently in line for what seemed like hours as I listened to my stomach growl while I inhaled the greasy aroma coming from ahead of me. The food was unhealthy and disgusting, but no one really complain because they are so hungry when it comes time for lunch.
When I sat down at my table with a steaming plate of who knows what I attacked my food before I even said a word to my friends.
“Nice to see you, too.” Livie giggled as she watched me stuff food in my mouth. I gulped it down with milk and returned her smile, and then I looked at my friend Coffee, that’s her nickname because she is always so energetic.
“So how did you do on that Geometry quiz you were freaking out over?” I tried sounding enthusiastic, not really caring but trying to fill the silence.
“95%, okay I guess.” She answered. Coffee is smart; don’t get me wrong, but that it the best score she has gotten in a while.
“Okay? Please, you know you’re siked, admit it!” SkitTles practically yelled, making some people turn their heads toward our table. Honestly, I have no idea why one of her t’s are bigger than the other, but that’s how she spells her name and we never try to argue with her.
“Um, SkitTles. Speak up, I don’t think the Mar’s rover heard you.” I told her calmly.
“Speaking of the Mar’s rover, my birthday party is tomorrow and I was wondering if you guys were sleeping over.” Livie asked.
“I know I failed in common sense, but what does that have to do with the Mar’s rover?” Coffee replied with a smile.
“Absolutely nothing. I just needed a way to bring it up,” Livie answered her cheerfully. “So can you guys come?” she finished by shoving apple sauce in her mouth.
“Sure, why not.” I said, then looked at the others, they both nodded. All four of us together, the way it should be. I finally started to relax, enjoying the break. I suddenly remember the text message sent to me before history and I started to pull out my phone, but then the bell rang. We all got up reluctantly and headed off to our next class.
My next class was spanish, where I sat in front of Jason and we passed notes back and forth out of total boredom. Our spanish teacher is so oblivious, kids get away with eating and talking and paper airplanes across the room when she isn't looking. Spanish is definately one of my favorite classes. Jason was already there when I arrived, and he already had a paper and pencil out and was writing. As I hung my backpack on my chair Jason handed my the note, now folded into a small square.
"What? I don't even get a hi now?" I joked with a huge smile on my face.
"Nope, but u get a nice piece of lined paper, congratulations!" Jason exclaimed sarcastically. I laughed, took the paper and sat down. I opened the paper slowly and quietly, to make sure our teacher wouldn't notice as she continued to talk about last night's homework.
"How was your day so far?" I read quickly as I took out my pencil.
"Okay I guess, I'm so tired!" I replied and sneakily slipped it through the slits in the back of the chair. He dropped his pencil and he bent down to retrieve it and he snatch the paper with his pencil at the same time.
Yeah, me too. You do the homework last night?"
"Of course I did. And of course you didn't! The pencil drop? LAME!"
"I tied my shoe this time, content? You get my text?"
"Nope, I never found time to read it. What did it say?"
"Read the message and you'll know, lazy!" He added a little smiley that made my heart flutter. What could the text be about? I tried to act normal, but I was dying to now what it said. Jason didn't text me that much, so every word was crucial to me.
"A hint? Pretty please with a cherry on top? Come on, you can't say no the the CHERRY!!!"
"Hmmm..... NO." He seemed to be pleased with himself, like he enjoyed watching me suffer. The curiousity got the best of me, so I slipped my phone in my pocket and raised my hand to go to the bathroom. I probably had my hand up for five minutes, and I could hear a little snicker from behind me. I ignored Jason, pleading that the teacher would turn around and see me. She finally did and she looked in my direction.
"Yes?" she asked, sounding a little embarrassed that she didn't see my hand before. I opened my mouth to ask if I could go to the bathroom, but someone beat me to it.
"Can I go to the bathroom?" I whirled around, with a furious look on my face. Jason was the one who asked before me, he was planning to occupy the only bathroom so I couldn't read his text message. He had an innocent look on his face, and in my head I screamed faker.
"Sure." She said, and Jason got up. I shot him my your dead look, but he gave a dramatic smile and hurried off to the bathroom. He spent a very long time in there, probably stalling until class was over. Jason finally walked out and took a seat, looking as proud as ever.
"Oh, and Katie? You can't go to the bathroom, the toliet is accidently clogged.” Jason whispered and winked at me. I tried to look irate, forcing down my smile and laughter, but who could stay mad at someone so perfect?
